How To Learn Hungarian Quickly

Hungarian isn’t impossible. It’s simply different from English.

As an expert in second language acquisition, I can tell you that most people struggle with Hungarian because they try to learn it using the same methods they used for Spanish or French. Because Hungarian belongs to the Finno-Ugric language family, it plays by a completely different set of rules.

If you want to learn Hungarian quickly, you need a smart, step-by-step plan.

Here’s my ultimate roadmap to get you speaking Hungarian as fast as possible.

Step 1: Master the Hungarian alphabet and pronunciation

The absolute first thing you must do is learn the Hungarian alphabet.

Don’t rely on English spelling to guess how Hungarian words sound. The good news? Hungarian is a highly phonetic language. This means that once you learn how a letter sounds, it’ll always make that exact same sound. There are no silent letters or surprise pronunciations like in English.

There are 44 letters in the Hungarian alphabet. Some of them are digraphs (two letters combined) or trigraphs (three letters combined) that make a single sound.

Here’s a quick HTML table showing a few of the trickiest Hungarian letters for English speakers:

Hungarian letterEnglish equivalent soundExample word
sz”s” as in sunszia (hello)
s”sh” as in shoesör (beer)
cs”ch” as in chatcsalád (family)
gy”j” as in jump (but softer)magyar (Hungarian)

Spend your first few days just listening to native speakers recite the alphabet and repeating after them.

Step 2: Learn the most common daily vocabulary

You don’t need to know 10,000 words to have a basic conversation in Hungarian.

In language learning, we often talk about the Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 rule. This means that 20% of the words in a language are used in 80% of daily conversations.

If you want to learn quickly, ignore complicated words at first. Focus entirely on high-frequency vocabulary: greetings, pronouns, basic verbs (to be, to have, to go, to want), and common nouns (food, places, time).

Here are a few essential phrases to memorize right away:

Step 3: Understand vowel harmony (the golden rule)

If there’s one grammar concept you must understand early on, it’s vowel harmony.

Vowel harmony is the “golden rule” of the Hungarian language. It sounds complex, but the concept is actually quite simple.

In Hungarian, vowels are split into two main groups based on where they’re produced in your mouth:

  • Front vowels: e, é, i, í, ö, ő, ü, ű
  • Back vowels: a, á, o, ó, u, ú

When you want to add a suffix to a Hungarian word (like adding “in”, “on”, or “at”), the vowel in the suffix has to match the vowels in the root word.

Let’s look at the suffix for “in”. In Hungarian, it can be either -ban (back vowel) or -ben (front vowel).

If a word has back vowels, you use -ban:

  • ház (house) ➔ házban (in the house)
  • autó (car) ➔ autóban (in the car)

If a word has front vowels, you use -ben:

  • kert (garden) ➔ kertben (in the garden)
  • étterem (restaurant) ➔ étteremben (in the restaurant)

Mastering vowel harmony will make guessing Hungarian suffixes incredibly easy!

Step 4: Grasp basic grammar and agglutination

Hungarian is an agglutinative language.

In English, we use separate small words to build a sentence. We say: “with my friend”. In Hungarian, you take the root word and glue suffixes to the end of it to show the meaning.

Think of it like building with Lego bricks.

Let’s take the word barát (friend):

  • barát = friend
  • barátom = my friend
  • barátommal = with my friend

Instead of learning a million different grammar rules, focus on learning these “Lego bricks” (suffixes). Start with the most common ones:

  • Plurals: -k
  • In / inside: -ban / -ben
  • On / on top of: -on / -en / -ön
  • To / towards: -ba / -be

Don’t try to memorize huge grammar tables all at once. Learn one suffix, practice it with vocabulary you already know, and move on.

Step 5: Speak from day one

A major mistake beginners make is waiting until they feel “ready” before they start speaking.

According to second language acquisition research, you need to produce the language (output) to truly acquire it. Reading and listening are great, but speaking forces your brain to actually put the puzzle pieces together.

Don’t worry about sounding silly or making mistakes. Hungarians are incredibly proud of their language, and they’re usually thrilled when a foreigner tries to speak it.

Here’s how you can practice speaking right away:

  • Talk to yourself out loud in Hungarian while doing chores.
  • Find a language exchange partner online.
  • Book a cheap conversational tutor on a platform like iTalki for 30 minutes a week.

Step 6: Immerse yourself in Hungarian media

Finally, you need to surround yourself with the Hungarian language.

You don’t need to live in Budapest to do this. You can create a Hungarian immersion environment right in your own home.

By listening to Hungarian consistently, your brain will naturally start to pick up on the rhythm, intonation, and pronunciation of the language, even if you don’t understand all the words yet.

Here are a few ways to immerse yourself:

  • Listen to Hungarian music while you work.
  • Watch Hungarian shows or movies on Netflix (with English subtitles at first, then Hungarian subtitles later).
  • Listen to beginner-friendly Hungarian podcasts during your commute.
  • Change the language on your phone or social media to Hungarian.

Summary

Learning Hungarian quickly requires a smart approach.

Don’t let the rumors fool you. By mastering the alphabet, focusing on common words, understanding vowel harmony, treating grammar like Lego bricks, speaking early, and immersing yourself in the language, you’ll make incredible progress.
